Establishment of a European
information system on forest genetic resources
Activity 3.1: Creation of the database and the Intranet (front-end)
Following the finalization of the data standards for the gene conservation units as part of Work package 2, the structure of the central database was designed. The data will be stored at unit and species levels, and it can be uploaded in file format or typed in online tables. The database and the Intranet were then developed for uploading the data. The Intranet serves as the entry point for the national focal points and it will provide them with a workspace to update and view their data. The location of the units is displayed using a solution based on Google Maps. Access to the Intranet is limited to the national focal points and each of them has been given a username and password. Activity 3.2: Testing of the implementation database
After the central database and the Intranet were created, the functionality of the implementation database was tested by the project partners before large-scale data uploading by the national focal points. The design and functionality of the implementation database is being further improved based on feedback received from the national focal points. Development of a module to obtain climatic data for each unit based on the geographical coordinates is underway. The climatic data will be obtained from the WORLDCLIM database. The development of the actual online information system (EUFGIS Portal) has been started and it will be launched at the final meeting which will be held in mid-2010. (Activity leader: Bioversity International)
Activity 3.3: Development of guidelines (user manual)
The development of the user manual has been started. The user manual will provide the national focal points with further information on the central database and the Intranet. The user manual will guide them step-by-step how use the intranet and upload the data. It will also capture their experiences and problems encountered. The user manual will be reviewed by all partners and it will be made available through the Intranet. (Activity leader: Bioversity International)
Activity 3.4: Helpdesk support
Helpdesk has been established to support the national focal points in compiling and uploading the data. The national focal points can obtain technical advice from and report any problems to two designated Bioversity staff members. (Activity leader: Bioversity International)
